SEA Seahawks @ SD Chargers, 5:00pm PST, ESPN
The Chargers preseason schedule starts off against the Seattle Seahawks, a team that pulled off an amazing upset against the New Orleans Saints in the playoffs last year. ESPN's currently favors the Chargers by 3.0 points, but you have to remember that winning preseason isn't a big deal-- preseason is basically utilized to observe positional depth and give rookies some playing time.
What to look for: SD - Look out for the special teams play of the chargers, which was abysmal at best in 2010. Rich Bisaccia, one of the more decorated special teams coaches in the league, is now on the Chargers staff and should help fix up 2010's worst special teams unit. Second-year running back Ryan Mathews is posed to have a breakout year, but will be sharing snaps with running back Mike Tolbert, who took over the starting position last year due to injury. 14 year veteran Takeo Spikes (acquired from the 49ers) and second-year linebacker Donald Butler(missed 2010 rookie season due to injury) will start for the first time at inside linebacker for the chargers. Also, don't count on seeing him for a large part of the game, but SS Bob Sanders will make his first appearance opposite Eric Weddle. First round pick, defensive end Corey Liuget will make his first appearance, and rookie cornerback Marcus Gilchrist is expected to start for Antoine Cason(finger injury).
