Five SAT Vocab Words| Week 2

fastidious (adj.) meticulous, demanding, having high and often unattainable standards

imperfect to him.)

hackneyed (adj.) unoriginal, trite (A girl can only hear “I love you” so many times before it begins to sound hackneyed and meaningless.)

San Diego vs. Seattle

49ers vs. Saints| Week 1

SF 49ers @ NO Saints, Friday 5:00pm
I don't really follow the 49ers as much as I do the Chargers and Raiders (I'm a Chargers fan, and follow most of the teams in the AFC West division), but I'll try to see what I can find. The 49ers start off their preseason against the New Orleans Saints, a team that was upset by the Seattle Seahawks last year int he playoffs. The Saints have drafted RB Mark Ingram and acquired former charger RB Darren Sproles to add another dimension to their big play offense.

What to look for: SF - Former Stanford head coach Jim Harbaugh will make his NFL coaching debut as the 49er's head coach this year. Rookie QB Colin Kaepernick (Nevada) is expected to see major playing time during the preseason, but most likely won't start in the regular season (Alex Smith is the starting QB). Among the significant roster moves by the 49ers are CB Carlos Rogers (from WASH), kicker David Akers (PHI), and WR Braylon Edwards (NY Jets). The talented first round draft pick, DE Aldon Smith will get a chance to showcase his talent on the defensive side of the ball as well. The 49ers lost defensive tackle Aubrayo Franklin and ILB Takeo Spikes in the offseason, but still remain a promising defense with the offseason roster moves, draft choices, and of course... The best inside linebacker in the league by far, Patrick Willis.

Raiders vs. Cardinals| Week 1

AZ Cardinals @ OAK Raiders, 7:00pm PST
The Oakland Raiders preseason starts off with a Cardinals team that has fallen short of the playoffs since quarterback Kurt Warner retired. To solve the QB situation, the Cardinals have made a few changes to the offensive line, and traded for Philadelphia's Kevin Kolb, who is expected to start under center for the Cardinals this year. The Cardinals also lost pro-bowl corner Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie in the Kolb trade.

What to look for: OAK - Keep an eye out for training camp standout wide receivers David Ausberry and Denarius Moore. The Raiders have lost Nnamdi Asomugha, arguably the best corner and easily the best defensive player on their team this offseason, and look to fill the gap. The Raiders have given big contracts to cornerback Stanford Routt, free safety Michael Huff, and OLB Kamerion Wimbley, whom the Raiders hope to contribute in 2010. On the offensive side of the ball, look out for former Giants tight end Kevin Boss, who hopes  to fill the gap of the promising Zach Miller, who left Oakland for Seattle. Darren McFadden will, of course, carry the bulk of the Raiders offense with Jason Campbell (QB) acting as a game manager and throwing to the speedy Jacoby Ford and Louis Murphy.

Chargers vs. Seahawks| Week 1

SEA Seahawks @ SD Chargers, 5:00pm PST, ESPN

The Chargers preseason schedule starts off against the Seattle Seahawks, a team that pulled off an amazing upset against the New Orleans Saints in the playoffs last year. ESPN's currently favors the Chargers by 3.0 points, but you have to remember that winning preseason isn't a big deal-- preseason is basically utilized to observe positional depth and give rookies some playing time.

What to look for: SD - Look out for the special teams play of the chargers, which was abysmal at best in 2010. Rich Bisaccia, one of the more decorated special teams coaches in the league, is now on the Chargers staff and should help fix up 2010's worst special teams unit. Second-year running back Ryan Mathews is posed to have a breakout year, but will be sharing snaps with running back Mike Tolbert, who took over the starting position last year due to injury. 14 year veteran Takeo Spikes (acquired from the 49ers) and second-year linebacker Donald Butler(missed 2010 rookie season due to injury) will start for the first time at inside linebacker for the chargers. Also, don't count on seeing him for a large part of the game, but SS Bob Sanders will make his first appearance opposite Eric Weddle. First round pick, defensive end Corey Liuget will make his first appearance, and rookie cornerback Marcus Gilchrist is expected to start for Antoine Cason(finger injury).

NFL - California Teams: Preseason Week 1

It's been a long time since Football has been on TV, but I'm happy to say that football is back. The first week of preseason starts tomorrow, Thursday August 11th with the NFL's first telecast in 2011 since the Superbowl.

In the next few articles I'll give a brief preview of the games that the California teams will play tomorrow and Friday; that is, the San Diego Chargers, the Oakland Raiders, and the San Francisco 49ers.
